Bratislava, December 2 (TASR) - According to a law approved by Parliament on Wednesday, several levels of child benefit will be introduced according to the period that parents work before having a child.
Parents, who used to be employed but give up their jobs in order to take care of a child will be given higher benefit reaching €256 a month as of January. Such parents will not be able to carry out any gainful employment at the same time, however.
The current level of the benefit at €164.22 per month will be given to parents who were never employed or worked only for a short period before having a child.
In addition, child benefit will be valorised as of January 1, even though this used to take place on September 1.
Christian Democrat (KDH) Julius Brocka criticised the law for being unfair to the large group of parents who won't be given the higher benefit. According to Brocka, child benefit shouldn't be based on parents' employment records.
