Bratislava, April 19 (TASR) - The extraparliamentary Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) said on Monday it co-signed a Memorandum on Protection of Waters against the building of a oil pipeline through Zitny Ostrov - river island known for its supply of potable water and fertile agricultural land - which was initiated by another extraparliamentary party Most-Hid and environmental groups.
The signatory environmental groups united under the association No to Oil Pipeline through Zitny ostrov said they will call on SaS or Most-Hid to honour their commitments after the June 12 election (if in Government).
SaS has vowed to never favour a solution leading to a short-term gain of a small group of people or companies over potential dangers of permanent changes to the environment, said deputy SaS chairman Juraj Miskov.
The Economy Ministry intends to build a pipeline to draw crude oil from Schwechat refinery in Austria to create diversity of supply, the need for which was evident in January 2009, when delivery of gas via Ukraine from Russia was disrupted due to dispute between the countries over payments.
The proposed pipeline is to be connected to the Adria pipeline, which originates in North Africa and runs under the Mediterranean.
