Gasparovic: New Future Is Waiting for Poland, It's Important Nation

Krakow, April 18 (TASR) - The plane crash that took the lives of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria Kaczynska as well as many important Polish civilian and military officals means the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Poland, Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic told TASR on Sunday night after attending the funeral.

"A new future awaits for the Poles, as well as for all of us in Europe," said Gasparovic, adding that every end means the beginning of something new. "Poland is an important player - not only in the region of Central Europe, but also on the whole continent. This country will keep this position in the future, too," he noted.

Gasparovic is sure that the Polish nation will cope with the tragedy. "It's their Poland, these are their representatives and they've lost them. But it's time to move on," he said, adding that the elections are fast approaching in Poland - first, the presidential then the general election.

Slovakia's President viewed the funeral as a very dignified farewell of Poles to their president and his entourage on the ill-fated April 10 flight. "This day (April 17) proved the internal strength of Poles," he added.
