Slovakia's Airspace Remains Closed over Ash from Icelandic Volcano

Bratislava, April 17 (TASR) - Slovakia's airspace remains closed until futher notice due to a volcanic ash cloud drifting across Europe from Iceland, spokesman for the Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry Stanislav Jurikovic told TASR on Saturday.

According to spokesperson for M. R. Stefanik airport in Bratislava Dana Madunicka, a total of 55 flights have been suspended to and from the airport since the airspace was shut down on Friday at 3 p.m. Approximately 8,200 people have seen their travel plans wrecked.

Low-cost carrier Ryanair, which operates the majority of flights at the Bratislava airport, has suspended all its flights between Bratislava and the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, France, Belgium and Germany until Monday 1 p.m. after the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation closed the western European airspace because of the ash spewing from the Eyjaffjallajokull volcano in Iceland.
