Bratislava, April 16 (TASR) - Construction of large-scale infrastructure in Slovakia may be endangered after June 12, said Prime Minister Robert Fico on Friday.
"The threat that the accelerated construction of motorways will be stopped is real. We don't know today what will happen after the (general) election (June 12)," Fico said after an extraordinary Government's session.
According to him, there is an option that a possible rightist government would stop construction of motorways via the public-private partnership (PPP) projects. "We have historical experience with a rightist government. They simply stopped construction of motorways," he pointed out.
Fico stressed that it is not possible to build motorways in Slovakia without employing PPP (public-private partnership) projects, as there aren't enough financial means in the state budget or the EU funds. There is €1.114 billion set aside for the construction of roads in the respective operational programme, but that is not enough. The state allocates only a few million euros for this purpose from its coffers.
Thus, the Government decided to pass a resolution on possible effects of halting the construction. Selected ministers are assigned to elaborate a study on the social and economic effects of the halting by the end of April.
