Caplovic: Slavs Deserve to Have Own Language in EU

Bratislava, December 2 (TASR) - Deputy Premier for a Knowledge-based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities Dusan Caplovic said at a conference on Wednesday that a Slav language should become one of the EU's working languages alongside French and English, TASR was told by the Deputy Premier's spokesman Michal Kalinak on the same day.

There are three large language groups in the Union noted Caplovic - Germanic, Romance and Slav. From a comprehensive perspective viewing Europe as a whole (from the Urals to the Atlantic), Slav nations make up some 30 percent of the European population, with Romance and Germanic nations making up 20 percent each. The EU includes five Slav states already and three states contain significant Slav minorities. The trend of further enlargement of the EU will lead to the induction of other Slav states, and Caplovic thinks that this fact should be represented in EU practices.
