KDH and SDKU-DS Seek More Credible Slovakia, SMK Better Functioning EU

Bratislava, April 16 (TASR) - Opposition parties Christian Democrats (KDH) and SDKU-DS touting their manifestos for the June 12 election on Friday stressed the importance of restoring Slovakia's image as a respectable partner, saying it can be achieved via a foreign policy based on nation-state interests and their promotion.
KDH chairman Jan Figel thinks that Slovakia's incumbent leaders make contradictory pronouncements ideologically oriented towards East rather than towards Euro-Atlantic partners. National diplomacy and defence calls for more professionalism and modernisation.
In its manifesto KDH pledges to seek more global trust for Slovakia with changes to the domestic policy, ramp up the country's activity in the European Union and Central Europe and improve bilateral relations with Hungary.
SDKU-DS promises to seek good neighbour relations, admission of Ukraine to the European Union with benefits for eastern Slovakia and intends to increase Slovakia's say in the EU decision-making after it forfeited its strong position in Europe during four years of the sitting government.
Ethnic Hungarian SMK wants Slovakia to make the European Union more functional as in the 1990s when it proposed solutions for the populations of member states and helped raise standards of living.
SMK views NATO as the only security organisation which can ensure peace in the Euro-Atlantic region, which is why Slovakia should remain involved in the alliance's operations in Afghanistan.
