Bratislava, April 16 (TASR) - A total of 15 flights from Bratislava and 14 flights to the Slovak capital were cancelled due to Slovakia's airspace closure on Friday, afflicting more than 4,000 passengers, TASR learnt on the same day.
The airspace was closed due to the cloud of ash from the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull spreading across Europe.
Even though commercial flights were cancelled, Bratislava M.R. Stefanik Airport remained open for emergency and police flights.
Around 350 people afflicted by the airspace closure were at Bratislava M.R. Stefanik Airport early in the evening. "The travellers realise that this concerns primarily their safety, so they respect the decision," airport spokesperson Dana Madunicka told TASR.
"The restriction has been in place since 3 p.m. (on Friday) for 24 hours, while this time may be modified depending on the meteorological situation in Slovakia and further volcanic activities in Iceland," said Madunicka.
