Fico to Lead Slovak Delegation at Copenhagen Summit, Replacing Medved

Bratislava, December 2 (TASR) - The Slovak delegation at the United Nation Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December will be led by Prime Minister Robert Fico, the Government decided on Wednesday.

The delegation was initially supposed to be led by Environment Minister Jozef Medved, but as the state representatives may sign a new declaration (to replace the currently valid Kyoto protocol), the Foreign Affairs Ministry proposed this change, arguing that the attendance of the head of the Slovak Cabinet is important.

The conference will take place between December 7-18, with ministers holding talks on the final two days. The conference is supposed to conclude the negotiation process and pass a final version of an international agreement between developed and developing countries on tackling global temperature increases.

Climate change caused by increasing emissions of greenhouse gases is one of the greatest threats posed by industry. "We assume that a time delay in carrying out or adopting precautions increases the risk of grave and irreversible changes while increasing the cost of their elimination at the same time," reads a statement issued by the Environment Ministry.
