KSS: Social State Is Only Possible with Communists in Parliament

Bratislava, April 13 (TASR) - Making Slovakia a strong social state is only possible with the Slovak Communist Party (KSS) in Parliament, KSS chairman Jozef Hrdlicka told at a press conference on Tuesday in Bratislava.

According to Hrdlicka, the current Government hasn't done anything to protect the working class in Slovakia, which earns only one fifth comparing to some Western European workers. "Instead of (ordinary) people, a privileged class that owns 90 percent of the economy rules in Slovakia. The real economic power has stayed in the hands of about 200 businesses and financial institutions, whose owners aren't elected by anybody," he stressed.

Hrdlicka points out that KSS welcomed the victory of Smer-SD party in 2006 and it has supported various legislative changes introduced by the current Government, but now they doesn't see their pre-election promises fulfilled. Hrdlicka is convinced that people were expecting more resolute changes after the rightist Government of Mikulas Dzurinda. "I don't see Smer-SD as a leftist party," he added.

KSS representatives are sure that they can gain at least 5 percent in the upcoming general election on June 12. The party offers a leftist and social programme "with their hands not tied by gratitude owing to sponsors", according to Hrdlicka.

KSS has only once managed to get to Parliament since 1989 and it was in the electoral term 2002-06, when the party received 6.3 percent of the vote. In 2006, it ended as the strongest non-parliamentary party on 3.88 percent.
