Supreme Court Senate Chairman Kandera Stepping Down

Bratislava, April 13 (TASR) - Supreme Court Senate Chairman Jozef Kandera, presiding in the case of alleged eastern Slovak organised crime boss Branislav Adamco and the so-called 'acid gang' that dissolved corpses of its victims in acid, has resigned from his post on Tuesday.

Kandera announced his decision in writing to Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic and Supreme Court Chairman Stefan Harabin. "We can confirm that Mr. Kandera stepped down from the post of judge," Sylvia Machalova from the Supreme Court Chairman's Office told TASR. In his written statement for the Slovak President, Kandera offered no explanation as to why he resigned.

However, he told TASR that he had more or less decided to resign a long time ago, with the final straw being Monday's court session with Adamco which was adjourned due to obstructions on the part of Adamco's lawyers. "I've chosen to step down because of the state the Slovak judiciary is in, as well as because of my family and due to the disciplinary actions led against me (by the Slovak Judicial) ... I have managed to finish some serious cases such as the one of the acid gang, while failing to finish some others," said Kandera. He didn't specify what kind of career he will now pursue.

His status as a judge will be terminated as of April 30, with Kandera taking a leave of absence as of April 15. Therefore, the case of Adamco et al will have to be examined by another judge.
