Derenik: Highway Construction Can Relieve Misery in Construction Sector

Bratislava, April 9 (TASR) - Highway construction will be the key element for the construction sector in Slovakia in 2010, TASR was told by UniCredit Bank macro-analyst David Derenik on Friday.
"The coming months will show whether the increase (in highway construction) will be able to compensate for the steep decline in developer business," said Derenik.
The Statistics Office earlier in the day reported that the construction sector in Slovakia recorded a year-on-year drop of 19.7 percent in February.
"While the developer business is finishing the partially built sites, and continues to fall by 30 percent y-o-y compared to the pre-crisis time, when it comes to the infrastructure construction, the trend has gradually set the converse direction," said Derenik.
Postova Banka analyst Eva Sadovska points out that the "period of contracts that were signed before the crisis, from which constructors benefited last year, is coming to its end. There's uncertainty with respect to new orders in construction".
Both analysts concur that a revival similar to the pre-crisis construction boom is not in prospect at the moment.
