Freso: Parties Views on Oil Pipeline across Zitny Ostrov Needed

Bratislava, April 9 (TASR) - The issue of the oil pipeline going across Zitny Ostrov, containing the largest potable water resources in central Europe, needs to be debated by the political parties running in June's general election, according to Bratislava Region (BSK) Governor Pavol Freso (SDKU-DS).

Freso was speaking after his working meeting with the civic association Nie Ropovodu cez Zitny Ostrov (No to the pipeline across Zitny ostrov) on Friday.

The pipeline can be build across Zitny Ostrov only if the current legislation is changed. "If the political parties will pledge not to support this [the change the legislation - ed. note] and keep their word, than the whole project becomes nullified," said Freso.

He added that at the regional level, efforts will be made to change the land use planning in such a way as to block the pipeline being build.

Chairman of the association opposed to the proposed route Miroslav Dragun says that the association held talks with the Economy Ministry in late February 2010. According to him, the Ministry issued a vague statement on the issue back then, failing to answer some crucial questions about the pipeline's route. Dragun added that the petition against the pipeline's construction across Zitny Ostrov continues, with 25,000 new signatures mustered over the course of past month. As soon as the petition will gather 100,000-150,000 signatures, the organisers will submit it to Parliament.

The Economy Ministry will have the final say in the matter, with its decision expected in mid-2010.
