Mesic: If Whole Europe Unites, There Will Be No More Wars

Bratislava, December 1 (TASR) - Uniting the whole of Europe, including its south-eastern states, will bring peace, and war as a political means will completely disappear from the continent, said Croatian President Stipe Mesic during his visit to Slovakia on Tuesday.

Mesic was speaking during his last official visit to Slovakia, as his second terms of office will end at the beginning of 2010.

"All the aggressors who have caused wars so far were basically protecting their minorities. But now, when Europe becomes united, it won't be necessary anymore," said Mesic, arguing that the incentive to take somebody else's territory will disappear.

Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic again assured his Croatian counterpart of Slovakia's support for the former Yugoslav country in its EU integration attempts. Mesic hopes that the country will complete its accession negotiations by the end of the year.
