Car Production Bound to Rise Again in 2010

Bratislava, April 8 (TASR) - Automobile manufacturers in Slovakia produced a total of 463,140 cars in 2009, a y-o-y drop of 18 percent, Car Industry Association (ZAP) President Jozef Uhrik said at a press conference on Thursday in Bratislava.

According to him, however, production is expected to rise again in 2010. "We expect that vehicle production in Slovakia will slightly exceed half a million cars this year," said Uhrik. In 1Q10, the Slovak car facilities manufactured a total of 136,000 cars.

However, Uhrik warned that Kia Motors, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Volkswagen Slovakia might run into problems in 2010. "Volkswagen Slovakia will be hit the hardest because of changes in production. KIA and PSA operate at full capacity, but need to interrupt production from time to time due to demand fluctuations. Fortunately, all these issues can be addressed without employee lay-offs," said Uhrik.
