U.S. and Russian Embassies Embrace New Nuclear Disarmament Treaty

Bratislava, April 8 (TASR) - Embassies of the U.S.A. and Russia in Slovakia welcome the signing of a new treaty to cut nuclear arms in Prague on Thursday, TASR learnt later in the day.
"Last April in Prague, President Obama made clear America’s intention to pursue the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons. With this agreement, the United States and Russia -- the two largest nuclear powers in the world -- send a clear signal that we intend to lead," the U.S. Embassy said in a statement for TASR.
"By upholding our commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, we strengthen our global efforts to stop the spread of these weapons. While this aspiration will not be reached in the near future, a fundamental part of that effort was the negotiation of a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia that is being signed today in Prague," reads the statement.
The Russian embassy, for its part, said that "we welcome the new treaty that helps demilitarise international relations."
The new landmark nuclear disarmament treaty, which envisages a cut of 30 percent in the arsenals of the two superpowers, was signed by U.S. President Barack Obama and his Russian opposite number Dmitry Medvedev in Prague.
