Gasparovic and Medvedev Issue Joint Communique

Bratislava, April 7 (TASR) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Slovak counterpart Ivan Gasparovic in Bratislava on Wednesday issued a joint communique marking the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe.

Both presidents consider WWII to be the biggest tragedy in human history, and on this occasion they paid tribute to the memory of the many millions of victims. The heads of both states highlighted the substantial contribution made by nations belonging to the Soviet Union, who bore the main brunt in terms of liberating Europe from Nazism.

According to the joint communique, the help given by the Red Army to the Slovak National Uprising movement (SNP) will not be forgotten. The Russian side is grateful to Slovakia for ensuring that Russian military graveyards are maintained and cared for in a dignified manner. Both sides declared that they will continue to take good care of memorials to those who fought Nazism during WWII.

The two presidents agreed that they will do their utmost to prevent the revival of old forms or the creation of new forms of Nazi ideologies and hatred, and will counter efforts to trivialise the guilt of the Nazis and their followers. Slovakia and Russia agree that historians should interpret historical facts as objectively as possible.

Gasparovic and Medvedev confirmed their mutual interest in contributing towards the building of a peaceful and prosperous Europe, based on the observance of international law and principles of the free and democratic development of states, as well as respect for inalienable human rights, freedoms and dignity.

Both countries proclaimed that based on mutual interest, mutual respect and benefit they are prepared to co-operate closely and along with other states look for solutions to the threats and challenges of the 21st century, such as international terrorism, cross-border crime, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, energy security and climate change.
