Coalition Intends to See Out Its Term Without Quarrels

Bratislava, December 1 (TASR) - Representatives of the coalition parties (Smer-SD, the Slovak National Party/SNS and LS-HZDS) announced after the Coalition Council session on Tuesday that they don't intend to confuse people with political disputes after their Coalition Agreement expires at the end of 2009.

"You'd love to see a quarrel in the Coalition and the same drama that the former Government had, but I have to disappoint you," said Parliamentary Chairman and Smer vice-chair Pavol Paska. In 2010, he wants to focus on Slovakia's growth and prosperity, and not deal with pointless quarrels as the previous government did.

When asked whether he is considering uniting with the Opposition after the Coalition Agreement expires, Paska said that he doesn't see any reason for that. "What would I need the Opposition for, when they don't need the Coalition in issues as natural as personal relations," he said, referring to an invitation to take part in the lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the Parliament building, which was turned down by representatives of SDKU-DS, the ethnic-Hungarian SMK and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH).

SNS vice-chair Anna Belousovova can't imagine members of the Coalition behaving irresponsibly by thinking only about their own parties and following their internal party goals. "The ambivalence of the political scene would surely be transferred to society and Slovakia would lose out during a global economic crisis. So what leads us into the parliamentary elections is the word responsibility and we have it," she claimed.

HZDS leader Vladimir Meciar said that there will be no problems in negotiations after the Agreement expires. "We have that much responsibility," he declared.
