Sanofi Pasteur to Supply Slovakia With Million Vaccines Against A(H1N1)

Bratislava, December 1 (TASR) - French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur will supply Slovakia with one million vaccines against A(H1N1) flu, with each dose costing €7.6, TASR was told by State Material Reserves Administration (SSHR) director Lubomir Urban on Tuesday.

The company signed a contract to this effect with SSHR on Monday.

Urban said that the first batch should arrive in Slovakia by the end of 2009, the next one by January 10, 2010, and the remaining vaccines should be in the country by February 8, 2010.

Slovakia is acting in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO) by aiming to secure vaccines for 20 percent of its inhabitants, with preference given to medical workers and people who are involved in running the state.

There have been some 490 cases of novel flu registered in Slovakia so far this year. The first case earlier this year was a 37-year old man who was infected on a trip to the U.S., and whose 8.5-month-old child subsequently contracted the disease. On November 24, a 32-year-old man who had caught the virus died in Prievidza (Trencin region), but he had other health problems.

On June 11, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced in the first global pandemic for 40 years in connection with the spread of the A(H1N1) virus.
