Young Man Dies With A(H1N1) Virus Dies in Stara Lubovna

Stara Lubovna, December 1 (TASR) - A 21-year old man died on Thursday, November 26, in Stara Lubovna (Presov region) due to multi-organ failure as a consequence of the A(H1N1) virus, TASR was told by the town's hospital director Peter Bizovsky on Tuesday.

The man was admitted into hospital on November 24. Bizovsky said that the presence of the virus in the man was confirmed this Monday.

The outpatient care provided to the patient didn't improve his health, and he was then admitted to a ward. Doctors continued intensive treatment but the man's respiratory organs began to fail. He was transferred to an Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday and connected up to an artificial ventilation device. Despite this he died in the early hours of November 26.

"The patient, although young, was also chronically ill. He had a chronic condition of the lungs and heart," said Bizovsky, adding that neither flu nor any acute respiratory disease was detected in the man's relatives, and that he must have become infected in Slovakia as he hadn't been abroad recently.

An increased hygienic and epidemiologic regime has been introduced at the given hospital. The director said that this was the first fatal case of the A(H1N1) virus in Stara Lubovna, although another three people were infected earlier. All of them were treated in the regular way and are now healthy.
