Dozens of Mayors Running in General Election on Slates of New Parties

Bratislava, April 6 (TASR) - As many as 33 current mayors are trying to gain seats in parliament in the general election on June 12 representing non-parliamentary parties.

The largest number of mayors, 14, are running as candidates of Slovak-Hungarian party Most-Hid. Seven mayors represent the newly-formed New Democracy (ND) party, while Union-Party for Slovakia has included six mayors. Next comes the Communist Party (KSS) with four mayors on its list and the Party of the Democratic Left with two.

Mayor of Presov Pavel Hagyari holds the highest position on all the slates, occupying second place in Union's list of candidates.

There are five women among the 33 mayors, four of which are running for the Union and one for Most-Hid.

Slovak legislation allows members of Parliament to hold the post of mayor or VUC governor at the same time. SDKU-DS MP Peter Missik tried to initiate a change in the past, proposing that such posts shouldn't be held by the same person, but he wasn't successful. He claimed that a combination of two posts goes against the principle of independence between executive and legislative power. He argued that mayors and governors shouldn't be tempted to use their legislative power to vote in favour of local interests.
