Young Man's Condition Stabilised, But Still Serious After Thursday's Train Crash

Kosice, April 3 (TASR) - The health condition of 24-year-old Jozef P., the sole survivor of four people who were on board the electric locomotive that crashed into a passenger train in Spisska Nova Ves (Kosice region) railway station on Thursday, is stabilised, however still very serious.

According to Jaroslava Oravcova, spokesperson of the Louis Pasteur Faculty Hospital (FNLP), the patient has to be under medication and connected to an artificial ventilation device. He will undergo further surgeries in the upcoming days, said Oravcova.

"The patient was transported to our hospital on Thursday afternoon with serious injuries and in an artificial coma. He suffered numerous fractures on his arms and legs and had to undergo surgery," said Oravcova, adding that the surgery lasted seven hours.

Three people were killed and ten were injured, one seriously, when a Slovak Cargo (ZSSKC) electric locomotive crashed into a stationary Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) passenger train from behind. One passenger-train carriage was partly derailed.
