SaS to Present Petition Sheets for Referendum to President

Bratislava, April 1 (TASR) - Extraparliamentary party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) said on Thursday that it would complete its pre-election campaign for the June 12 general election with a formal presentation of petition sheets for a SAS-organised referendum on topical social issues to Slovakia's President on June 9.

The party will hand over the sheets in front of Presidential Palace, said SaS deputy chairman Juraj Miskov adding that his party will being the petition drive later this month.

"We will kick off proceedings in Bratislava with a press conference and go around Slovakia clock-wise ... that is, we will first go northward and return via, south, back to Bratislava," he explained.

SaS representatives intend to spend 44 days in and around Slovakia visiting some 500 municipalities.

The plebiscite called for by SaS should comprise six questions including the scrapping of radio and television concessionary licence fees, restriction of parliamentary immunity, reduction in the number of lawmakers from 150 to 100, capping the price on government cars, facilitate voting in elections via the internet and quashing of the provisions of the Press Act that gives public officials a guaranteed right to reply to media reports.

To be valid, the referendum will have to succeed and have at least 50 percent of the country's eligible voters participating.
