Three People Killed in Train Crash in Spisska Nova Ves (UPDATE)

Spisska Nova Ves, April 1 (TASR) - At least three people were killed and ten were injured, one seriously, in a train crash at the railway station in Spisska Nova Ves (Kosice region) shortly before noon on Thursday.

According to a Fire and Rescue Corps dispatcher, the Corps is currently at the scene. The accident took place when an Slovak Cargo (ZSSKC) electric locomotive crashed into a stationary Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) passenger train from behind. One passenger carriage was partly derailed.

Among the ten people injured in the passenger train, four have been taken to a hospital in Spisska Nova Ves. "It seems that these people suffered only minor injuries, but their condition needs to be further monitored," said district hospital director Jozef Nascak. Some of the injured have been hospitalised in Levoca (Presov region) and Krompachy (Kosice region), and paramedics from Poprad (Presov region) had to intervene at the crash site.

According to Nascak, four people were on the electric locomotive that crashed into the train, including an instructor who was training a new engineer. It was this young man, getting ready for his new job, who turned out to be the sole survivor from the foursome.

Lubica Zonova from the Railroad Police reported that the case is under investigation. According to unofficial sources, the locomotive in question was tested on a trial run after being overhauled in a railway depot. During the testing of the electrodynamic brake, the locomotive began to accelerate instead of braking and went out of control.
