Bratislava, March 31 (TASR) - Slovakia's history is likely to include more cases akin to the country's recent acceptance of three former detainees from the U.S. detainment facility Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak indicated on Wednesday.
"More than 1,700 people have been relocated to Slovakia in the past three years," said Kalinak. "We've had several delicate cases over the past few years, and we never provided information on them just because we wanted the whole thing to turn out well," said Kalinak.
The three prisoners from Guantanamo Bay were escorted to Slovakia on January 25. The Slovak Government's decision to accept the threesome was announced by Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak on January 19.
Lajcak added that Slovakia made this decision based on individual choice. "In this way, Slovakia is committing itself to the EU and U.S. bilateral proclamation on co-operation vis-a-vis the closure of Guantanamo that was made on June 19, 2009," said Lajcak, adding that Slovakia is thus expressing its support for U.S. President Barack Obama, who has ushered in a new atmosphere in international relations.
