Bratislava, April 1 (TASR) - A special police squad arrested a senior member of an international criminal organisation called 'Thieves in Law' (in Russian 'Vory v zakone') near the village of Hronska Dubrava (Banska Bystrica region) on Monday, Police Presidium spokesperson Andrea Polacikova told TASR on Thursday.
Thieves in Law emerged in countries of the former Soviet Union but is active throughout Europe, said Polacikova.
The arrest was preceded by a request from the German authorities. They were searching for a man described only as Otari M., 48, who has given the authorities of several European countries the slip. The entire operation, which apart from Slovakia involved raids in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, Italy and France, resulted in the arrest of 80 members of the criminal gang.
"The gang was engaged mainly in organising thefts, with part of the profits being passed to more senior levels of the group," said Polacikova, adding that Otari M. will be extradited to Germany.
