Bratislava, March 31 (TASR) - The Tokajska wine-producing region in eastern Slovakia is to be renamed as the more unequivocal Tokaj, according to an amendment to the Wine-producing and Viticulture Act that has been drawn up by the Agriculture Ministry and was approved by the Government on Wednesday.
The proposal takes on semantic difficulties that have cropped up in connection with the current designation and relate to the peculiarities of the Slovak language and its origins, putting Slovak Tokaj producers at a legal disadvantage vis-a-vis their Hungarian counterparts.
"The legislative proposal introduces a change in the name of the Tokajska wine-growing region, bringing it into harmony with traditions, the ingrained method of labelling wine products in the region in question and previous legislation," stated the Agriculure Ministry.
