Foreign Affairs Ministry: Treaty of Lisbon to Make EU More Efficient

Bratislava, November 30 (TASR) - The Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomes the fact that the Treaty of Lisbon will come into effect as of December 1, and will modernise the functioning of the EU to meet existing needs and requirements, ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR on Monday.

"Hence, the EU should become a true global player, able to react to all challenges on the international scene, not only thanks to more efficient decision-making process but also due to the unified voice the EU will present to the rest of the world," said Stano.

The Treaty of Lisbon will also strengthen the powers of the European Parliament to an equivalent level to national parliaments. "It's precisely the national parliaments that will guarantee that European legislation won't be regarded as an obstacle (in the EU's way), but will be approved in accordance with the interest of its people," claimed Stano. He added that the treaty also opens room for further EU enlargement.

"The Foreign Ministry believes that the Treaty of Lisbon will bring the EU closer to its people by virtue of introducing the possibility of referendums for EU citizens as well as strengthening the features of representative democracy," said Stano, adding that the new posts of the European Council President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will guarantee more efficient functioning of the EU externally.
