Brussels, March 29 (TASR) - Slovaks are not fond of sports much and the country belongs among the bottom third of EU countries when it comes to the ratio of people going in for sports, says the Eurobarometer survey on physical activities and sports published by the European Commission on Monday.
According to the survey, 30 percent of Slovaks do sports at least once per seven days, a fact which puts Slovakia in 18th place on the ranking of 27 European countries. However, Slovakia fared best of all the Visegrad Four countries in this parameter, with Hungary in 23rd place, Poland 22nd and the Czech Republic in the 20th place. First place was captured by Sweden, followed by Finland (72 percent), Denmark (64 percent) and Ireland (58 percent).
The survey says that only five percent of Slovaks go in for sports on a regular basis (five times per week or more). Some 25 percent of Slovaks engage in sports "sometimes" (once-four times per week) and 35 percent "rarely" (once-three times per month). Another 35 percent claimed that they never do sports. The countries with the fewest number of people regularly going in for sports are Greece, Italy and Bulgaria, all having only 3 percent of "sportsmen".
Slovaks cited medical problems as their main motivation for being active in sports (61 percent), with those who don't do any sports blaming it on a lack of time (46 percent).
In Slovakia, the survey was carried out by AISA SK agency in October 2009 on a sample of 1,006 respondents.
