Slovakia to Provide Project Aid to Fewer Countries

Bratislava, March 29 (TASR) - The Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry will provide developmental aid – both programme and project – with the bilateral project aid totalling €1.05 million to be received by a smaller number of countries this year than in the past, namely Sudan, Ethiopia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, says the proposal submitted to the Government.

The medium-turn strategy is focused on 16 states, with Ministry representatives arguing that the projects are way too fragmented and the monitoring processes are overly complicated. Also, the assessment of the impact these projects have on the economic and social development in the individual countries involved is quite limited.

On the other hand, the number of countries to receive the programme aid remains the same, with €1.05 million allocated to go to Serbia, Kenya and Afghanistan. In the case of Afghanistan, the aspect of development aid is based on Slovakia's security policies and national interests as well as on commitments accepted within the EU and NATO frameworks.

The aid for Afghanistan will be granted to projects designed to establish the rule of law exercised by local governments in particular, social development focused on education and healthcare, and provincial economic development.

In Kenya, the Ministry intends to support projects with an eye towards building democracy, improving healthcare - especially in its struggle against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. These priorities are to be followed by building the economy, alleviating the impact of climate change on Kenya's development and improving the agricultural sector.
