Group of Judges Launches Campaign to Tackle Justice Issues

Bratislava, March 29 (TASR) - A group of judges unhappy with the state of justice in Slovakia have launched an independent initiative entitled 'For Open Justice' in order to highlight and tackle the sector's problems.
The initiative maintains that citizens have a right to lawful, impartial and independent judges adjudicating on the basis of their free will and within the bounds of the law, and to efficient and transparent court proceedings with a view to removing protraction.
Representative of the initiative Miroslav Gavalec of the Supreme Court singled out political interference in the judiciary, the inadequate qualifications of some judges, the insufficient promotion of ethics in the judiciary, the abuse of disciplinary proceedings, and a lack of transparency as the principal problems.
