Buses to Pay Road Toll, Lowered by Half

Bratislava, November 30 (TASR) - Fee payments for the new system of the electronic road toll to be launched in January in Slovakia will be paid by buses as well, reports Transport, Post and Telecommunications Ministry at its webpage on Monday.

The decision on this matter has been awaited for several weeks.

The ministry's spokesperson Stanislav Jurkovic told TASR that it wasn't possible to completely exclude buses from the toll payments. The ministry decided, however, that bus operators will pay only half of the regular fee. As well, buses will be divided into several groups and payments will differ on their basis.

Full fees will be paid only by transport operators with vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes. The construction and operation of the system is managed by SkyToll consortium that signed contract to this effect with the National Highway Company in January this year. The toll will be applied to over 2,000 kilometres of highways, motorways and first-class roads.

The building of the system is financed by Tatra Bank, Postova Bank and the Austrian Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich-Wien AG. The costs should reach €107 million. The contraction and operation of the toll system was in September also joined by J&T Finance Group that has gained a 10-percent share in one of the managing consortium's participants, the Ibertax company.
