Culture Ministry Has Drawn Up Instructions to State Language Act

Bratislava, November 30 (TASR) - The Culture Ministry has drawn up a methodical instruction to the State Language Act, ministry spokesman Jozef Bednar told TASR on Monday.

Bednar added that the document, which has been submitted to Government ministries for discussion, was prepared in co-operation with experts from the office of Knut Vollebaek, OSCE High Commissioner for National Minorities.

The spokesman noted that the ministry views the Instructions as a domestic matter. Therefore Hungary, which has had several objections to the Act, will only be notified about its content at the mixed Slovak-Hungarian Committee.

The Act, which has been in force since September, was heavily criticised by Slovakia's ethnic-Hungarian parties SMK and Most-Hid, and the Hungarian Parliament adopted a resolution appealing for Slovakia to revoke the law.

The disputed amendment was also evaluated by Vollebaek, who said that the Act is not at variance with international standards and international law, but pointed to a necessity to draw up detailed Instructions for its implementation.
