Figel Notes Rising Amount of Legal Action by EU Against Slovakia

Bratislava, March 25 (TASR) - The European Union is launching more legal proceedings against Slovakia under Prime Minister Robert Fico's remit than in the past, with the country in danger of sustaining financial losses, Christian Democrat (KDH) chairman Jan Figel told a press conference on Thursday.

"Since 2007 the number of legal actions and their importance have been on the rise, which will have repercussions on future governments," said Figel, formerly a member of the European Commission.

As a consequence, Slovakia will have to compensate losses to companies that rightly object to Slovakia's infringements of the rules. "And it's the hidden debts and hidden deficits that will lay themselves bare after the scandals are over," he added.

Figel also brought up the issue of pilot social enterprises, which have also come under criticism from the European Commission. It has become clear following an audit by the Commission in December that the EU's executive body has no intentions of refunding a single euro of the €25 million designated for such projects, he said.
