SDKU: We Won't Initiate Tomanova's Dismissal, It's Too Near Election

Bratislava, March 25 (TASR) - The opposition SDKU-DS party announced at a press conference in Bratislava on Thursday that it won't initiate an extraordinary parliamentary session with a no-confidence vote against Labour Minister Viera Tomanova (Smer-SD) on the agenda.

Tomanova is currently facing criticism from the Opposition and members of the governing Coalition for failures in the social enterprises projects as revealed by the European Commission (EC).

According to SDKU election leader Iveta Radcova, with less than three months to go until the general election (set for June 12) it is the duty of political parties to present programmes offering solutions to the country's problems over the next four years. "It's Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's full responsibility to evaluate the work of the minister (Tomanova) in terms of to what extent she has or hasn't contributed to improving the living conditions of the people of this country, so we won't initiate an extraordinary session," she said.

Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) chairman Jan Figel said at a press conference earlier on the same day that the premier should dismiss Tomanova, mainly in response to an audit conducted by the European Commission (EC) in December 2009, according to which it is clear that the EC won't pay Slovakia a single euro of the €25 million designated for such projects. The projects were dismissed by the EU due to grave mistakes.

The Slovak National Party (SNS), which has seen several of its environment and construction ministers removed during this electoral term, has accused Fico's Smer party of using double standards – treating its junior government partners SNS and LS-HZDS according to one standard and its own ministers according to another.

SNS vice-chair Anna Belousovova noted during a news conference on Tuesday that Tomanova is 10th on Smer's list of candidates for the general election, meaning that whatever happens she doesn't stand to lose her government post.
