Lajcak: Basic Treaty Needs to Be Used in Slovak-Hungarian Relations

Bratislava, March 25 (TASR) - The mechanisms of the Treaty on Good Neighbourly Relations and Friendly Co-operation between Slovakia and Hungary, known also as the Basic Treaty, should be implemented more when addressing the issues of Slovak-Hungarian relations, Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministers Miroslav Lajcak said on Thursday.

Speaking at a conference marking the 15th anniversary of the signing of the document, Lajcak said: "There's a number of 'experts' who offer their comments on how Slovak-Hungarian relations should be addressed. I've heard many times about the European Parliament, European Commission, European Court of Justice, OSCE, Council of Europe, sometimes even the American Congress or United Nations. The voices calling for embracing the bilateral tools set in place by the Basic Treaty were heard less often," said Lajcak.

In the past, implementing the Basic Treaty in practice proved to alleviate the suspense in bilateral relations, and in case of delicate issues, bring the debate back to the rational, professional level, he added.
