President Signs Law Enabling Restituents to Get Money Instead of Land

Bratislava, March 24 (TASR) - The Slovak Land Fund (SPF) will be able to offer restituents money instead of land, according to an amendment to the law on adjusting property rights to land and other agricultural property that was signed by President Ivan Gasparovic on Wednesday.

According to the previous law, if SPF wasn't able to return the same piece of land that a restituent owned before it was confiscated by the Communist regime, it could offer substitute plots instead.

The new rules proposed by Prime Minister Robert Fico state that restituents would be able to choose the replacement land themselves. "If the restituents don't agree to receiving substitute land or it isn't possible to provide them with replacement land that they have chosen for justified reasons, the compensation for the land will be provided ... in the form of money," reads the document.

The law increases the number of plots that can't be provided as compensation, especially when this is in the public interest, and also aims to improve the transparency of the procedure.
