Almost All Volkswagen Cars Made in Slovakia in 2009 Were Exported

Bratislava, March 24 (TASR) - German car-maker Volkswagen's Slovak unit said on Wednesday that sales abroad (totalling €2.93 billion) accounted for 98.7 percent of its total output in 2009.

The company exports mainly to European Union countries, with orders from Germany making up 39.5 percent last year.

Purchases from China accounted for 13.2 percent, while the U.S.A. and Russia bought 6.4 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively.

Chairman Andreas Tostmann, speaking at an annual press conference, singled out China as a very promising market, as exports there rose by 7.3 percent year-on-year.

The Slovak Volkwagen unit's production range is currently made up of sports utility vehicles such as the Touareg, the Audi Q7 and the Skoda Octavia. Octavia production will be wound up in May of this year in order to prepare for the New Small Family car range.

This year will also see the launch of production of the Touareg Hybrid, a new model equipped with energy-saving and other improved features.
