Gov't: Presov Region to Receive Over €2.8 million for Various Projects

Stara Lubovna, March 24 (TASR) - Districts in Presov region will receive €2.866 million from the state for their development, it was announced after the Government session held in Stara Lubovna (Presov region) on Wednesday.

The largest individual amount - €1 million - will be allocated to the reconstruction of a sports arena in Stara Lubovna that was built at the beginning of the 1980s. The town of Stara Lubovna will also be given €500,000 for the reconstruction of its castle.

Historical sites should also be restored in Levoca and in Cerveny Klastor (both Presov region).

According to the Economy Ministry, which submitted the proposal passed by the Government, districts in eastern Slovakia have high tourism potential. The ministry pointed out, however, that tourism is part of the service sector, and so is significantly dependent on consumer demand, which is linked to real incomes. "A significant change in its development can therefore only be expected in line with the overall growth of the Slovak economy," stated the ministry.

Currently, tourism contributes only approximately 3 percent of Presov region's GDP. If support was forthcoming, however, this figure could be increased to 9 percent in 10-15 years, claimed the ministry. This would also contribute to the growth of the Slovak economy by boosting the tourism sector by at least 0.5 percent.

According to the ministry, developing tourism would also bring new employment opportunities in a region with a long-term unemployment problem. At the end of 2009, the unemployment in Presov region stood at 18.9 percent, with the highest rates recorded in Kezmarok (25.68 percent), Sabinov (25.40 percent) and Snina (22.31 percent). The lowest unemployment rates were in Presov (16.26 percent), Stara Lubovna (12.92 percent) and Poprad (10.84 percent).
