Fico: 'Europe 2020' Must Set Goals Aimed at Growth and Employment

Bratislava, March 23 (TASR) - At the upcoming EU summit held in Brussels this week, Slovakia will pursue the idea of reducing the number of aims included in the new EU strategy entitled Europe 2020, said Prime Minister Robert Fico on Tuesday.

According to Fico, the reason behind this initiative is that the objectives stated in the strategy should more properly reflect the real goals and capabilities of individual member states. Also, the language of the strategy must be absolutely comprehensible, said the premier.

Fico wants to urge the participants at the summit to make sure that the strategy focuses largely on growth and employment. "Then, we'll be emphasising that the goals set by the strategy may be ambitious, but have to be realistic," he said. "We remember how the Lisbon Strategy ended up with its too ambitious objectives when it comes to EU's competitiveness," noted Fico.

The premier also said that the new strategic document of the Union is going to be so important that it has to be acknowledged in the programme manifesto of the new government in Slovakia following the June 12 general election.
