Fico: Slovakia to Promote Solidarity Towards Greece at EU Summit

Bratislava, March 23 (TASR) - At the EU summit in Brussels at the end of the week, Slovakia will promote the principle of solidarity in reaction to economic problems of Greece, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at Tuesday's European Affairs Committee.

"I want to repeat again that we will respect the solidarity principle, if the EU will want to take that approach towards Greece," said Fico.

According to him, there is a great chance that there will only be a political stance concerning this issue adopted at the summit rather than specific solutions, because those are not ready yet.

"I assume that at the session of the European Council in Brussels we will mainly discuss the issue whether to help Greece at all and in what scope ... what should be done ... but there is such disagreement in opinions that I don't expect any quick result," explained the premier.

Fico also commented on the concept of establishing a European Monetary Fund (EMF). "Many EU member states dislike the fact that if a problem occurs and financing is needed, other institutions enter the process because the EU is not capable of helping itself and taking appropriate steps," he said. He added that he himself would prefer a "combined solution" - featuring international and European assistance – as far as the issue with Greece is concerned - also EU plus another international institution. Fico said Slovakia won't be against the idea of establishing EMF, if the well prepared.
