Manka: I'll Do My Utmost Not to Disappoint Voters

Banska Bystrica, November 29 (TASR) - According to official results released by the Central Election Committee (UVK) on Sunday, Smer-SD MEP Vladimir Manka (also supported by LS-HZDS) received 53.7 percent of votes in the race against rightist Jozef Mikus (SDKU-DS, KDH, OKS, KDS and SaS) at 46.29 percent in Banska Bystrica region.

The turnout was 18.01 percent in the region.

In reaction to the results, Manka thanked those who gave him their confidence. "I will surely not disappoint ... and I will do my utmost to do everything to the full and achieve results for those who voted for me, but also for those who voted for somebody else," he said.

The new Banska Bystrica governor will first focus on the regional budget, since the current one is not sufficient to finance the basic needs of the region. "Therefore it needs to be immediately amended," said Manka. He also plans on drawing as much money from the European Union funds as possible, since those can help the region the most, he claimed.

Besides budget, Manka wants to deal with corruption and thieves, mentioning information about some dubious tenders he plans to look into.

Manka also commented on questions resulting from the combination of his new post with the seat in the European Parliament. "Within three weeks I will finish dealing with the EU budget and then I can fully concentrate on the region," he said.

Manka received 53.7 percent of votes in the race against Mikus at 46.29 percent. The new governor said he wants to co-operate with his defeated colleague Mikus – also an MP – in the future.
