SNS: If Orban Doesn't Apologise, He'll Be Persona Non Grata in Slovakia

Bratislava, March 23 (TASR) - The co-ruling Slovak National party (SNS) considers a recent statement by the hot favourite to become Hungary's next premier Viktor Orban (Fidesz) - who said that he intends to speak to ethnic Hungarians living in Slovakia first and only then with the Slovak Government after the Hungarian elections in April - as a provocation and attack on Slovakia.

SNS chairman Jan Slota and party vice-chair Anna Belousovova further told journalists that SNS will initiate a parliamentary discussion on the matter in May, and propose a resolution.

"No Felvidek [the term Orban used to describe Slovakia and which is used mainly by Hungarian nationalists - ed. note] has ever existed, and if Orban wants to meet Hungarians, let him meet them in Hungary". said Belousovova. At the same time, she demanded that Orban should apologise for his statement. If he doesn't do so, "he'll be persona non grata in Slovakia," she said.

Slota said that if he went to Hungary to stir up emotions between Slovaks and Hungarians like Hungarian representatives do in Slovakia he'd be shot dead on the spot. Slota also mentioned Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom, who said recently that ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia should learn Slovak as a foreign language. "He's an absolute provocateur," he said.

Belousovova reiterated SNS's recently formulated stance that Brussels should withhold Hungary's future presidency of the European Union (January-June 2011) until it abandons its irredentist tendencies.
