Bratislava, March 22 (TASR) - The United Nations' Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is concerned by segregation of Roma children in the Slovak education system, Stefan Ivanco of an NGO called the Consulting Centre for Civil and Human Rights told TASR on Monday.
"The Committee has released its final recommendations in which it urges the Slovak Government to ensure proper compliance with commitments stemming from the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination," said Ivanco.
The recommendations don't apply only to the area of Roma education, but also to other existing problems concerning relations towards the Roma minority, such as segregation in housing and forced sterilisation of Roma women.
The Committee called on the Slovak Government to recognise failures that have been made in these areas and compensate the victims of such practices.
The entity's report was preceded by a meeting between the committee's members and the Slovak Cabinet's delegation on February 16-17 in Geneva.
