Dzurinda: We Won in Bratislava, We'll Manage Elsewhere too Next Time

Bratislava, November 29 (TASR) - The strongest opposition party SDKU-DS triumphed during the elections to regional authorities in Bratislava region on Saturday, winning the highest number of councillors and governor's post, drawing hopes for the triumph in the next election too, the party leader Mikulas Dzurinda said on Sunday.

Speaking a day after the party saw its candidate Pavol Freso win over Vladimir Bajan for Bratislava governor, Dzurinda said that watching the vote unfold in Trencin, Banska Bystrica and Presov region makes him believe that the party held up well everywhere. "I consider it a challenge and strong encouragement," he added.

He views Smer-SD's allegations that it won 7-1 over SDKU-DS as spurious, since SDKU-DS was also part of the "Slovak" coalition including Smer-SD which backed Milan Belica, who was re-elected as governor in Nitra region.

"Smer continues to be a strong political rival for SDKU-DS. In one case we have outperformed it, in others we came close," said Dzurinda admitting that in Kosice the Opposition did not even threaten the candidate for governor. Differences in support between Opposition parties and Smer-SD are narrowing, rather than widening" he said.

"At the time, based on our statutes, there will certainly be conferences held by regional-level organisations, which will take measures to improve the results in future," said Dzurinda.

New Bratislava VUC governor Freso said he wants to hit the ground running when taking over the office in the coming period. One of his first actions will be to halt the mounting regional government debt, which will be followed by incremental implementation of his goals.
