Volkswagen Slovakia Made Profit of €57 million in 2009

Bratislava, March 22 (TASR) - Volkswagen Slovakia ended 2009 with a net profit of €57 million, chairman of the company board Andreas Tostmann told TASR on Monday.

The total revenues of the car plant reached €2.94 billion in 2009. According to Tostmann, the Bratislava-based car plant produced over 105,000 vehicles, of which 80 percent were SUVs.

Tostmann noted that the company achieved good results despite the tough economic conditions. He pointed to the decision to produce the New Small Family line of vehicles in Slovakia. The estimated total investment is €308 million. Production of the new model will create 1,500 new jobs, with another 7,000 people finding work with suppliers.

Apart from producing whole vehicles, VW Slovakia also manufactured 289,000 gearboxes in 2009. In Martin (Zilina region), 24.7 million parts were produced for the company's plants.

VW Slovakia was employing 6,500 people at the end of 2009.
