Radicova: SDKU Will Present Election Reform Platform This Week

Bratislava, March 21 (TASR) - One of the points in SDKU's election programme to be presented this coming week will be reform of the Election Act, TASR has been told by SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova.
According to Radicova, SDKU doesn't plan to introduce any revolutionary changes to the election system – rather the proposed changes will bring harmony to current provisions in order to make elections more convenient for the public. [Slovaks have had the lowest turnout in Europe for both of the European Parliament elections it has participated in and has had several referendums nullified by the low turnout - ed. note]
Certain technical aspects of the elections should be unified, such as those pertaining to the questions as to when individual elections should take place, who is allowed to vote and when the pre-election campaign may take place, said Radicova. The official campaign does not begin until two weeks before the vote itself.
She has already promised during the run-up to her campaign for the presidency last year (which she lost to incumbent president Ivan Gasparovic in the run-off) that regardless of the election result, she will propose changes dealing mainly with pre-election campaigns.
"It's absurd when completely different rules are in place for one election than for another election, including moratoriums (on advertising before elections), the length of campaigns and campaign funding," she said.
