EU: Slovakia Produces Little Waste But Lags Behind in Recycling

Brussels, March 19 (TASR) - Slovakia generated the third lowest amount of municipal waste per person of all EU-member countries in 2008, but the country is lagging behind when it comes to the quality of waste processing, according to a report on the Union's waste management that was released by Eurostat on Friday.

Slovakia generated 328 kilograms of waste per person, with only the Czech Republic and Poland and recording lower figures (306 and 320 kg, respectively).

As regards waste treatment, 83 percent of 'Slovak' municipal waste ends up in land-fill sites, which is 43 percent more than the EU average. Another 10 percent of waste is incinerated (the EU average is 20 percent), while recycling accounts for a mere 3 percent, way below the EU average of 23 percent. Composting makes up the remaining 5 percent (the EU average is 17 percent).

Austria, Germany and the Netherlands are the most eco-friendly EU countries in this respect, as they recycle or compost 69, 65 and 59 percent of municipal waste, respectively.
