SNS Marks 71st Anniversary of Slovak-Hungarian Little War

Spisska Nova Ves, March 19 (TASR) - The co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS) at Spisska Nova Ves airport (Kosice region) on Friday commemorated the 71st anniversary of the so-called Slovak-Hungarian Little War fought between March 24-31, 1939, in which Hungary attacked Slovakia over unsettled territorial claims without a declaration of war.

SNS chairman Jan Slota ceremoniously tapped a memorial stone at the site where a commemorative mound is due to be constructed in memory of the casualties of the war.

"As every year, we've commemorated the 71st anniversary of the Little War, which wrong-footed any decent person, as ten days after Hungary recognised Slovak statehood Slovakia was attacked by Hungarian fascist armies," said Slota.

It was from Spiska Nova Ves airport where the first Slovak aircraft took off to bomb the invading Hungarian troops and thus help to halt the attack. Spisska Nova Ves subsequently came in under bombardment.

Slota drew a parallel between the events of that time and today's developments, saying that the cowardice of Hungarian politics is also reflected in the 21st century. "Hungarian political leaders are showing how their politics is hypocritical and cowardly. Mr. (Laszlo) Solyom (the Hungarian President) with his pronouncements is encroaching on the sovereignty of the Slovak Republic and tensions between Hungary and Slovakia are escalating," he said.

The SNS chairman sees great danger especially in the increasing strength of what he referred to as Hungarian neo-Nazi party Jobbik and the Hungarian Guard, whose members have undergone military training. "Something like this took place 71 years ago as well, that on one hand you're being recognised but on the other you're being attacked and killed," he said.
