Yanukovych Invites Gasparovic to Visit Ukraine

Bratislava, March 19 (TASR) - Newly-elected Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in a telephone call on Friday invited Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic to visit Ukraine in the second quarter of 2010.

The Slovak president welcomed the invitation. "There's a lot of questions that we both want answered. Questions that will concern our good relations, mutual help and the global world," he said. "I'm convinced that the good relations that we have with Ukraine will even improve during your presidency," he added.

At the same time, Yanukovych thanked Gasparovic for his congratulations on being elected Ukrainian president and assuming office.

Yanukovych told his Slovak counterpart that Ukraine expects huge spring floods within the next few days caused by melting snow in the western part of the country. He therefore asked Gasparovic for help in Transcarpathia [or Subcarpathian Ruthenia, which was formerly part of the Habsburg Empire and later Czechoslovakia - ed. note].

According to the Ukrainian president, the floods could threaten the Slovak-Ukrainian borderlands and "there is a big risk that the level of the rivers Tisa, Latorica and Uzh will rise". The Slovak president confirmed Slovakia's interest in helping Ukraine. "Slovakia wants to be a very good friend of Ukraine. ... We'll do everything we can to help you with the things you'll need," he stressed.
